I've always been a big Tour de France fan. But it wasn't until about four months ago that I discovered tiz-cycling.racing ... and oh boy, the floodgates opened. I quickly realized a handful of things ...
1. The Vuelta and the Giro are even more exciting. Who knew? (OK, I suppose if I lived in Europe, I would have. But here in the U.S., coverage of cycling is somewhat, shall we say, limited.)
2. The classics are awesome! Especially cobbled classics!
3. I really need to find a cycling game to play.
And so I ended up here.
---
To be honest, about 90 percent of my cycling knowledge came as a result of reading the manual for this game before signing up. About all I knew before that was I really enjoy climbing stages. So of course I chose a climbing team to start.
(If I had that to decide again, I probably would have went the other direction, if only because I think there are more opportunities for flat road/sprint teams, but maybe I am incorrect in that belief.)
I immediately started scouring the "hire a rider" list for better riders than my beginning crew of mostly motley, hopeless chum. Much to my delight, over the first 10 or so days, I came across multiple solid climbing types that I could buy for around $40,000 to $50,000 ... or only about $10-20K once I released one of my originals for the $30K or so they were worth.
I had no idea that I would wind up in a spot of controversy. Apparently those riders were recently created climbing captains for new teams that had been dumped to give a cheating owner more money with which to scout riders for his/her "real" squad. I got accused of cheating in order to get all those climbers on my squad (by an owner who, in all fairness, had I been in his shoes I might have made the same accusation.) In reality I was unknowingly taking advantage of someone else's cheating, but had I known what was going on before I hired those riders, I wouldn't have.
In any case, it seems I lucked into a great start. In my first month I got two wins (both by Piet Winters in Division 10) and eight results. I also have a young rider (Antonio Ricci) with incredible climbing potential who I am in the process of training. I will likely cut my roster down to the minimum to max the money I can pump into him, and once that's done I will start saving for either another young talent or (probably more likely?) to start acquiring a staff.
My goals remain modest, as it's all about the long term and team growth. I believe I will make it to Division 6 by the end of the year (I just made D7), but frankly what division I am in at the moment doesn't matter much to me. I want to win climbing classics, no matter what division they may come in, so that will be my racing target for the time being. Long term (I mean, REALLY long term), I want to develop an all-around squad capable of winning any kind of race and competing well in tours. That's probably years away.
Much thanks to Knotts (California Mist) for his advice and encouragement (and his defense during the controversy).
Happy racing!

Thanks for your contribution and good luck!
Welcome to the game Dan. You have been a great addition so far with your race previews! Thanks
only a message away if you need anything
Goodluck, all I gave you was some basic advice to help you get started. You took that on board and went with it and have really developed a strong team already. As Cloud Atlas said one of the best starts ive seen.... If Ricci maxxes high, youve got a solid captain for years to come and already solid support for him - takes most teams a few seasons to get this. Goodluck going forward, only a messag

Welcome to game Dan, interesting read and good luck around here :)
Good to meet you Dan and good luck in the game. If you have any questions, dont hesitate to ask, the community here is very welcoming and helpful (but also competetive!!!) :-) Have fun.
Good reading, Good luck!
You have the best start I have seen from any team! ( even old pros that start a new team) congrats and do try to go for all those mid divisions classics and tours as once you get to the higher leagues it’s harder to ever ride those tours again unless you stop playing for a time
